About Me
I was inspired to add a bit of information here because I managed to get several photos into the final selection of the Goty. Goty 2007 Week 43,
AND the following week Goty 2007 Week 44
, and also Goty 2008 Week 1
.
2010 was something of a "get out again" year for me and I was rewarded with Goty 2010 Week 14 final selection.
, and then out of the blue Goty 2010 Week 22
was nominated as the weeks selection. This of course gives you the privilege of nominating the winner the next week; that is a very humbling activity. Goty 2012 Week 17 saw me return with another photo
which was very pleasant as this was also a second visitor point photo.
Wonderful stuff this geographing, it helps me with my spelling (at 71 I still need help) Thank you all moderators! I use the "check spelling" box, and often have a gentle chuckle at the mistakes thrown up and sometimes the suggestions for some of the Welsh place names. It helps get me out more, but living in the Border Marches that is not a real problem, and allows me to promote all those things I consider to be important.
I moved to North Wales in the 90's, and within a few months I had discovered the Llangollen Canal
, The Llangollen Railway
& Erddig
.
In 2009 I moved to Llangollen and found myself a great place to live
, with a view of Castell Dinas Bran
and the slopes southward towards Glyn Cieriog
. Life in retirement is good!
We have a lot of rain so we have some great rivers, some big
, some smaller
and some a lot smaller
and they all flood sometimes
. With all this rain reservoirs have been built to supply drinking water
and to help regulate water flows
.
Early in 1995 I stopped at Safeways (now Morrisons) in Y Trallwng (Welshpool)
whilst on a journey from South Wales, and discovered The Montgomery Canal. That was me hooked! A derelict canal being restored! For the last seventeen years I have walked, cycled and canoed "The Monty" and, of course, photographed it. Along came Geographs and the rest is history. The canal starts here

which was the initial northern restoration to Aston. Meanwhile sections to the north and south of Y Trallwng have been restored furthest north is

, and south is

.
In the meantime the Aston to Gronwen wharf section was being restored, there is a nature reserve
at Aston top lock
and some 3 miles of restored canal
. There are 3 locks at Aston the bottom of which is my favourite complete with stone seat to watch the world go by
. I had a front row seat when John Craven opened this section on the 4 April 2003
. The limit of navigation is at present Gronwen Wharf
but work is underway on the next section.
Much of the next few miles of the canal is dry and some degradation of the structure has taken place.
This means that restoration is often complex and expensive, but when work began on serious restoration I managed to get a few photographs of critical stages. First get the piling and profiling completed,
and then get a good layer of clay applied
, let the water run in
and go back sometime later to see what it looks like
.
Thomas Telford had always been someone I admired and here in North Wales were two examples of his supervision of major civil engineering projects. The Pont Cysyllte Aqueduct
and the Holyhead Road
with the famous bridges at Betws Y Coed
& Menai
.
This area has a few of these

and at least two of these
, which lead to some pleasant evenings with a glass.
This is North Wales and The Border marches so we must include some real stars:
