        <description>The tunnel was built to enable horses towing boats, carrying mainly coal and limestone, to pass underneath the Bugsworth Basin arm of the Peak Forest canal. Horses were unhitched from boats travelling to and from the Whaley Bridge Basin, led through the tunnel and returned to the towpath on the other side to be re-hitched to their boats.</description>
