At the time the photograph was taken, the tunnel was open at both ends; it has now been infilled at the northern end and blocked by a concrete wall about 20yds in under the A38 at the southern end.</description>

When the photo was taken the western portal had already been buried.  Subsequently, this end has also been infilled and buried beneath a whole lot of landscaping - which might excuse the poor quality of the photo, taken in early evening and a lot of Welsh weather!</description>

        <description>Supplemental to the geograph already submitted, here is the same airshaft from below ground.  15ft in diameter, it was the largest shaft, and the only one to be sunk in the northern half of the tunnel due to restrictions imposed by the owner of Catesby House, under whose grounds the tunnel passed.  The 1m 1240yd tunnel, on the former Great Central Railway between Charwelton and Braunston &amp; Willoughby, was opened in 1840 and closed on 3 September 1966.  Photo from 1979.</description>

Both tunnels lie in the same grid square, and the photo was taken 25 years ago, so forgive the confusion!</description>
