St Martin of Tours church, Saundby

Grade I listed

There was probably a Norman church before the present building, nothing remains except the font which is now on a modern base.
The church dates from the 13th century onwards, and was restored in 1885 and 1891. There is a west tower, nave, chancel, north aisle, vestry and south porch.
The west tower dates from 1504 and consists of three stages, topped with eight crocketted pinnacles.
The tower window contains some pieces of 15th century glass. There are three bells.

There is a tomb in the chancel floor to William Saundeby, Lord of the Manor, and his wife Elizabeth who died in 1418. There is also a mutilated effigy of a Knight in armour outside the chancel screen, which is the church founder, one of the De Saundebys, possibly William himself.
The Manor passed into the hands of the Helwys, and there is a Memorial to John Helwys (1535 to 1599), and his wife Mary Blagden. They had two children, Margaret and Gervase who became Lieutenant of the Tower of London. He was hanged in 1615 due to his involvement in the murder of Sir Thomas Overbury. He left behind eight children.

The chancel dates from the 19th century, there is a Priest's door on the south side. Externally there are battlemented parapets.
The south porch dates from the 14th century, with a 15th century arched opening.
The nave north arcade is 13th century, as is the tower arch. The roof is 19th-century, and most of the stained-glass is 19th century.

The east wall of the chancel has a mosaic reredos and the walls on either side of the altar on lined with alabaster and panels of red Verona marbles. There is a 14th century piscina. The east window is by Clayton and Bell from 1865. There are also windows by Kemp, 1885.

The Rood screen is of oak, taken from one tree growing in Norfolk.

The church has been closed since 1973, but remains consecrated and is looked after by the Church Conservation Trust.
