Tring Memorial Garden :: Shared Description

In 1896 Liddington's Manor Brewery and adjoining parts of Lower Dunsley, Tring, were demolished by Lord Rothschild, of Tring Park, to make a water garden. Many exotic trees were planted including the huge Wellingtonia (Giant Redwood). In 1903 the Green Man public House was demolished to extend the garden. During the 2nd World War the mansion was used as offices for the Rothschild banking business and subsequently became a school, the water gardens becoming neglected. The land was transferred to the Tring Urban District Council in 1950 for use as a memorial garden, which was opened in 1953. In 1989 (50 years after the outbreak of the Second World War) plaques were mounted on the entrance pillars bearing the names of the Tring war dead. By about 2011 the lily pond had become very neglected and as a result the garden was improved, the lily pond relined, and a fountain installed. In 2014 (100 years after the outbreak of the First World War) an additional plaque was added relating to the First World War.
