Lonely Lane :: Shared Description

A track along the west side of Updown House park, leading from Northbourne Road south along the east side of Sangrado's Wood, past Westwood and Rose Cottage, crossing Cater Road, then continuing along the edge of the woodland to join Straight Mile a little east of the junction with the Dover Road. The road was created in 1789 by a magistrates' court order, on the application of the then Lord Northbourne, to divert the existing highway (which roughly followed the present drive) out of Updown Park. The part north of Cater Road remains well used as a drive to Westwood, and north of there, as a bridleway, but the part south of Cater Road is now heavily overgrown. The track has no known formal name, but is known locally as Lonely Lane. At the present time (2015), the track is recorded neither on the definitive map of public rights of way, nor the list of streets.
