Cockenzie House
A late-17thC house built by the Winton estate, possibly as a base for the manager of their harbour and salt pan. In 1715 it passed to the York Building Company, and was sold to the Cadells of Haddington in the mid-18th century. To the west, adjoining the house, is a warehouse, the 'Great Custom', which antedates the house, but appears to have been modified in the early 18th century. Latterly it was in use as a nursing home until 2008, and is now in community management, with shop, tea room, and space available for small business units and studios. The gardens are in three parts - a very wild, natural area, a more formal area between the entrance gates and house, and an area for vegetable gardening.
