St Peter's church, Foston
The church dates from the late 12th century onwards, and was restored in 1859 by Charles Kirk.
It is built from limestone, ironstone, blue lias with lead roofs and slate south porch roof. It consists of a west tower, nave with north and south aisles, south porch, and chancel with a Chapel to the south.
The late 12th century tower has three stages with a large buttress on the south-west corner. There is a late 12th century doorway on the west side, which is blocked. The Bell openings have late 12th century openings under round headed arches. The eaves are 15th century with gargoyles, battlements and ornate corner pinnacles.
The tower contains three bells which can be chimed only. There is also a tractor weathervane, which reflects the church's farming links.
The north aisle was rebuilt in 1859, of coursed blue lias with ashlar plinths, buttresses, window dressings and moulded eaves. The west window has single narrow light.
The chancel was also restored in 1859, there is a 19th-century east window with triangular headed lights and head label stops. The south Chapel was also rebuilt at that time, as was the south side of the aisle. There are some reset 12th century plain lancets windows.
There is a steeply pointed 13th century tower arch.
The nave has three bays, the north arcade of circa 1200 with octagonal piers, the south arcade is early 13th century with octagonal piers. There is a late 12th century round chancel arch with chevron decoration, and an early 13th century south arch in the chancel to the south Chapel. There are encaustic tiles in the chancel, two aumbries in the north wall and a single aumbry in the south. The south Chapel also has an aumbry with a pointed head in the south wall.
The font is 12th century octagonal, supported on claws with decorated panels although the rectangular supports are 20th century. Other fittings date from the 20th century.
The fabric of the church is in good condition, and there is a benchmark bolt in the tower.
