Chesterfield Area

By Ashley Dace

Due to a good forecast in the Chesterfield area I took the train to Chesterfield on the Saturday. It had been a while since a previous visit. Exiting the station I found the old Chesterfield canal, taking the route up to near Staveley. This section is isolated due to Norwood tunnel that has collapsed. Well used by the locals for leisure, it is open to cyclists as a fast route into Chesterfield. There was a diversion near the end due to works at Hollingwood lock.

After passing the lock I took the road to Barrow hill, passing the site of Staveley iron works. Geographing a few of the surviving buildings and old railway lines.

My target was Barrow Hill roundhouse, my last visit was in 2007 so I was looking forward to it. First I photographed the last moments of 56040 Oystermouth, currently being scrapped. Inside plenty of steam interest, including a J17, Black 5 and a few industrials.
Outside hadn't changed much, apart from the new Pinxton signal box. I also saw the brick kilns opposite.

I was due to catch the bus back to Chesterfield but I missed it by a few minutes so walked back. The cloud caught me up eventually but this wasn't a major problem. After lunch the journey to Duckmanton started, this is a railway cutting with exposed coal measures. Also of interest is the filled in Duckmanton tunnel.

Thankfully on the way back I got a single ticket back to Chesterfield, walking the short walk to the station before catching the train back to Leicester.
