Hatton Locks (21 locks)
The twenty one lock Hatton Flight raises the level by 146 feet over two miles. The canal opened in 1799 as the Warwick & Birmingham Canal later becoming the Grand Union Canal in 1929. In the early 1930s the locks were widened to accommodate pairs of 14 foot wide boats to compete with road and rail for transport of freight. The original locks can be seen adjacent. Locks and bridges were constructed in concrete, the modern material of the period.
Basford Locks (4 locks)
The short flight of four locks near Long Itchington in Warwickshire includes a staircase of two, in which the bottom gates of the upper lock are also the top gates of the lock below it. The flight provides a rise of 26ft 9in (about 8.2 metres) eastwards.
The Warwick and Napton Canal was formally opened on 19 December 1799 but actually open for trade on 19 March 1800. It became one of the eight canals merged into the Grand Union in 1929.
