Shropshire Union Canal

Audlem Locks (15 locks)

Formerly called the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, this was opened in 1835, linking the Chester Canal at Nantwich to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal at Autherley Junction, hence to Birmingham up the Wolverhampton Locks (see the first posting on this thread).

There are fifteen locks in the flight, numbered from south to north, and lowering the water 93 feet (about 28 metres) over a mile and a half. An energetic crew can navigate the flight in under two hours if no delays occur, but more realistically two and a half to three hours is more likely plus time for delays (which can be considerable), five hours not being unknown at busy times in the summer season. There are good pubs in Audlem.

Tyrley Locks (5 locks)

As one of the contributors says, this route must be the hardest way of entering Cheshire; five locks at Tyrley, five more at Adderley (see below), and then the fifteen at Audlem (see above). The flight of five locks at Tyrley, south of Market Drayton, lowers the water by 33 feet (10 metres).
