Introduction

Every day there are anniversaries of events that have taken place throughout Britain and Ireland over the years. Sometimes Geograph has displayed a picture marking a particular anniversary as ‘Picture of The Day’.

This article is intended to use Geograph photos to illustrate historical events in some way. For example, that could be by showing a photo of blue plaque on a building where a famous person was born or lived, or a monument or memorial to a significant battle or disaster.

The article is extracted from a Geograph Forum thread of the same name which was started by Philip Halling in August 2018. Since then, several dedicated Geograph members have been posting daily photographs which are relevant to events on the date on which they are posted. This also includes some photos from the Geograph Germany site.

Structure

The events and photographs are grouped by calendar month. Each month is included in the Contents list as a clickable link to the first day of that month within the article. Within each month, photos are listed in day/Month order, without taking account of the Year, therefore an event which occurred on 1st June 2020 could appear before an event which occurred on 1st June 1920.

To find a photo of an event from a particular month, click on the Month in the Contents list above, then advance page by page as needed to find the required date and event. There can be multiple events posted on the same day. Some events may have been repeated. As mentioned above, older events might appear after more recent events on the same day/month.
