In East Port, just before it becomes High Street, is the house in which the famous Covenanter Richard Cameron was born LinkExternal link He came to a grisly end after publicly denouncing King Charles II as a tyrant. In 1680 he and his supporters were killed by government forces at Airds Moss. Cameron's head and hands were hacked off his body and put on public display in Edinburgh. Cameron Drive in the village is named in his honour.
