Centenary Commemorations
Events
'Cheadle remembers the War Horse'
In August 1914 requisitioned horses were gathered in the Market Square to be handed over to the military. The 'Cheadle Remembers the War Horse' event in August 2015 brought together local horses and owners to recreate a photograph.
Mud Soldier
The Mud Soldier sculpture was created from a composite of Passchendaele mud and sand by Belgian twin sister artists Damian and Killian Van Der Velden. Over four days, the sculpture in Trafalgar Square will be largely washed away by rainfall.
Tracks to the Trenches
The Apedale Railway ran events in 2014, 2016 and 2018 highlighting the role of light railways in supplying the front lines on the Western Front.
The Chase Through Time
An event was held in 2017 to mark the military history of Cannock Chase as home to two large training camps during the Great War.
