During the war it was thought that Germany might attempt to break the deadlock of trench warfare with an invasion on the East Coast. Some 48 pillboxes were built in Norfolk of which 24 survive.

The Territorial Force formed in 1908 from the earlier Volunteers trained in Drill Halls in their cities, towns and villages. Some seven hundred of the buildings have survived and 90% are recorded in the article.
