Construction

The main construction site was set up at Halton Training Camp on the north side of the River Lune. Construction work started in earnest at the beginning of 2014.
The project required bridges to be constructed on the 3 minor roads (Halton Road, Kellet Lane and Foundry Lane) which form a triangle to the west of Halton. To minimise traffic disruption, only one of these roads could be closed at a time. Halton Road (south side of triangle, parallel to the river) was closed first, to enable Shefferlands Bridge to be built.
In June 2014, temporary bridges were built over the A6 and Lancaster Canal to facilitate the movement of earth from east (cutting) to west (embankments). An artificial drumlin was created between the canal and railway north of Skerton, to dump surplus earth and provide some screening of the road.
In September 2014, completion of Shefferlands Bridge structure allowed Halton Road to be reopened and Kellet Lane (NW side of triangle) to be closed.
Between November 2014 and January 2015, the Folly Railway Bridge steel beams were erected. This required overnight closures of the West Coast Main Line.
In January 2015, the Milestone Bridge pre-cast concrete arch sections were erected over Lancaster Canal.
Early in 2015, the temporary bridge over the A6 was removed to allow construction of Lancaster Road Bridge to start.
In April 2015, erection of the Lune West Bridge steel beams started.
On 26 April 2015, a "Welly Walk" along the route of the new road, was organised by the local hospice and Costain. Over 2500 people took part, in virtually desert conditions.
In May 2015, the Torrisholme Road pre-cast concrete bridge beams were erected.
In June 2015, the Lancaster Road (A6) steel bridge beams were erected. Carus Bridge was completed and Kellet Lane was reopened. This enabled Foundry Lane (NW of Halton, last side of triangle) to be closed, for rebuilding of the bridge over the M6. The dumper trucks started using Folly Railway Bridge to transport earth.
In July 2015, the last of the Lune West Bridge steel bridge beams were erected. The western span of Foundry Lane Bridge was removed.
In September 2015, the Beaumont Bridge (Green Lane) and Beaumont Gate (occupation) Bridge steel beams were erected.
In October 2015, the temporary bridge over the Lancaster Canal was removed.
On 1 November 2015, a second "Welly Walk" took place, with a Halloween theme. This time it was foggy and soggy underfoot.
In December 2015, the Foundry Lane Bridge new steel bridge beams were erected.
Progress was hampered by bad weather through the winter.
In March 2016, the first realigned M6 J34 slip-roads were opened - southbound entry and northbound exit. Following an on-line poll, it was announced that the road would be named as The Bay Gateway.
In May 2016, the realigned M6 J34 southbound exit slip-road was opened.
In late June 2016, Foundry Lane Bridge was completed and reopened, and Lancaster Road (A6) bridge was opened.
On 31 July 2016, the new M6 J34 northbound entry slip-road was opened, which necessitated the partial opening of the Lune West Bridge.
On 29 October 2016, the third and final "Welly Walk" took place, again with a Halloween theme. There was definitely no need for wellies this time as it was tarmac all the way.
On 31 October 2016, the Bay Gateway was opened. There was still a little work to finish off.

The photos below are separated into locations, from west to east. The photos at each location are arranged chronologically (oldest first).
