Running the project
To run the project, click on Developer, open the Macro pane, highlight A01_pathway and click run.Note that the software comprises two stages which can each be run separately or sequentially. You will be prompted as to what you want to do at appropriate points. However you can only go straight in to the leaderboard generation stage if you have run the first stage on some previous occasion.
A worksheet entitled article_input will be generated (AGF) containing the data formatted for insertion into the article. The annual_leaderboard worksheet will also be generated (AL). A number of intermediate worksheets will be created along the way but most will be hidden in the final results.
After the project has run through the first stage, the following worksheets will be visible:
original_data
clean_data
easy_read_table
annual_summary
article_input
annual leaderboard
After the second stage has run the following additional worksheets will be visible:
crosstable
crosstable_updated
alltime_leaderboard
alltime_rate_leaderboard
Note that the success of any part of the project is dependent on the presence of the correct input files. If any are missing, a warning message will be generated and the project terminated.
In case of problems
If it proves necessary to rerun the project for any reason, all the newly-generated worksheets will be automatically deleted leaving only the essential input worksheets. If you wish to retain any of the previously-generated worksheets, you should save the old workbook and copy to a new workbook which should now be used as the active workbook.
Experience has shown that a variety of inconsistencies might be found in the original data. I have tried to anticipate what these might be and taken this into account when writing the code. If the project stops running or produces incorrect results, this will likely be due to further unexpected inconsistencies in the original data which might imply that modifications to the code are necessary. This will in turn require some working knowledge of Visual Basic Applications for Excel.
