IP

The people of Ipswich had an IP address long before the internet came about, because this is their postcode. The area covers Suffolk (except for the southwest and northeast extremities) and also southwest Norfolk.

The sequence of numbering is shaped rather like the tape in an old cassette: Starting in central Ipswich, numbering ascends anticlockwise around the suburbs and then around the outside of the town, heads up the coast and then inland along the Norfolk border, and finishes by spooling anticlockwise again into the centre of Bury St. Edmunds.

IV

The IV postcode area is based on Inverness and it is I think the largest in terms of area, rivalled only by PH, its southern neighbour. As well as serving the towns east along the Moray Firth, IV covers the whole of northwest Scotland from Kyle of Lochalsh (plain 'KYLE' postally speaking) to Cape Wrath – and also the Isle of Skye.

There is no longer an IV33, IV34 or IV35 district as these were merged into AB38 in August 1994. The non-consecutively numbered IV63 was separated from IV3 in recent years, although I have not been able to ascertain exactly when.

(At local government reorganisation in 1974, the old Scottish counties, unlike many in England and Wales, were not substituted by the Post Office, so the old county names remain correct for postal purposes. This is only theoretically true of Nairnshire, however: because Nairnshire's only post town is NAIRN, and a town giving its name to a county in this way does not have the county added, 'Nairnshire' does not feature in any addresses.)
