LL

I suppose LL could only really be in Wales. Officially it stands for Llandudno but numbering starts in Wrexham and the area takes in all of north Wales apart from the northeast corner, which comes under CH (Chester).

The area is unusual in that it contains no single-digit districts at all and, as far as I can tell, is the only postcode area to have been so right from the start.

There are more post towns than average; and many of them are very small places hardly associated with the word 'town'. Often their postal significance lies in the fact that they have (or had) railway stations - such as DYFFRYN ARDUDWY and TALSARNAU on the west coast line and BODORGAN and TY CROES on the Holyhead line. However, I am not sure that this is the reason for the numerous tiny places afforded post town status on the northeast Anglesey coast. A particular curiosity is TYN-Y-GONGL, which is a really tiny place completely outgrown by its neighbouring seaside village, Benllech: it is perhaps surprising that the post town has not been changed but TYN-Y-GONGL is still Benllech's post town.

NB Royal Mail ceased the requirement for county names on addresses in 1996 and these were not updated after local government reorganisation of the following year. Therefore, Clwyd and Gwynedd remain correct county names.
