The letters NE commonly mean northeast and this is quite suitable, because NE is centred on Newcastle upon Tyne. It is a reasonably large area, covering Tyne & Wear (excluding Sunderland and Houghton-le-Spring), and all but the northern extremity of Northumberland.

The NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE post town area, as well as covering the city and a small area south of the Tyne, extends rurally along the A696/A68 corridor right up to the Scottish border. Since NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE's postal county is Tyne & Wear, this splits postal Northumberland into two unconnected parts.

The NE17 district is an oddity, as it does not quite adjoin the rest of the NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE post town area. (The historical reason seems to be that Chopwell, which NE17 covers, was a post town itself until 1937.)

Numbering runs from 1 to 40 (with the exception of 14) within Tyne & Wear and Blyth; continues to 48 in western Northbumberland; and then jumps to 61 for northern Northumberland.
