PE

PE is for Peterborough but this area is a wide one, extending from Huntingdon across to the coast along both sides of The Wash – to Skegness and Hunstanton.

There is no longer a PE17 or PE18 district; these were formerly HUNTINGDON, whose post town area was re-coded to PE26-29 in December 1999 (when the post towns ST. IVES and ST. NEOTS were created from it too).

PH

The PH postcode area is based on Perth and is, along with IV, one of the two largest by area – covering the majority of Perthshire and the southern part of Inverness-shire across to Mallaig and the Small Isles. It also reaches the southern end of Morayshire and the Ardnamurchan peninsula and, since 1999, has also included BALLACHULISH and KINLOCHLEVEN.

(At local government reorganisation in 1974, the old Scottish counties, unlike many in England and Wales, were not substituted by the Post Office, so the old county names remain correct for postal purposes.)
