BS

BS stands for Bristol, in postcode terms. It covers a fair distance north and south of the city – the Bristol post town extends northwards to Thornbury while the post towns WESTON-SUPER-MARE, CHEDDAR and WEDMORE to the south also come under BS.

The former, more rural, BS12 and BS17-19 districts of the BRISTOL post town have been changed to the 30s and 40s in recent years.

NB The Royal Mail ceased the requirement for county names on addresses in 1996 and these were not updated after local government reorganisation of the following year. The county Avon therefore remains the correct postal county for BRISTOL and the others shown as such. (Since BRISTOL did not historically require the county name beforehand, though, it is omitted here.)
