The stone on the bridge is inscribed with the year 1981 and the initials C and D in diagonally opposite corners. It refers to Charles and Diana and the royal wedding that year. There are other bridges with the same plaque - for example, one on the Wimborne By-Pass a few miles from here.

(The dual carriageway was built before 1981, so I'm not sure whether the subway was an afterthought or whether the stone was just added.)

SZ0992 : Springbourne: footpath C13 heads southwest from Portchester Place by Chris Downer
This route runs alongside the main Wessex Way and clearly was created when the main road was built. It passes the dead end of Portchester Place, just as a similar path on the other side (C18) passes the dead end of Portchester Road - the road was severed to make way for the dual carriageway, along with its parallel neighbours, and many houses were sacrificed.
