The river is joined above the 'new' bridge by the River Windrush. The Windrush rises in the Cotswold to the north of Taddington, Glos flowing south through Bourton-on-the-Water and Burford.

The 'new' bridge was erected in the 13th century by monks on the orders of King John. Together with the bridge at Radcot these are the oldest surviving bridges crossing the river.
