The Crowmarsh Gifford side of Wallingford Bridge is home to hydraulics research and modelling. The Hydraulics Research Station moved to Wallingford in 1951 and following privatisation is now known as HR Wallingford. The NERC's Centre for Ecology and Hydrology is the UK's centre for research into hydrology, terrestrial and freshwater eco-systems and their interaction with the atmosphere.

Parts of the twenty two span Wallingford bridge date from the 13th century with further works in 1751 and 1810-2. There are records of a bridge at this site from 1141 but the importance of the crossing declined after the bridge opened upstream at Abingdon in 1416.
