RAF Coningsby
Airfield Code: EGXC; Grid reference: TF 224 566. OperationalRAF Coningsby is an operational station currently equipped with The Eurofighter Typhoon, a twin-engine, canard–delta wing, multi-role fighter.
Coningsby airfield was opened as a grass runway in November 1940 as a bomber base, under 5 Group, Bomber Command. The first resident squadron was 106 Squadron, they arrived in February 1941, operating Hampdens. They were soon followed by 97 Squadron in April 1940, equipped with Manchesters.
During the period between September 1942 and August 1943 the concrete runway was laid with additional infrastructure.
617 the Dambusters Squadron were stationed here for a short period between August 1943 and January 1944 before departing just up the road to RAF Woodhall Spa. Woodhall Spa and Metheringham were Coningsby's satellite stations.
Post War - For a short period after the war the resident squadrons operated Avro Type 694s, better known as the Lincoln before these were replaced in 1946 by Mosquitos until March 1950. Washingtons were the next aircraft to be flown from Coningsby until the introduction of the Canberra brought the heavy jet bomber era to Lincolnshire. From late 1954 until 1956 the station was closed for major expansion, including runway extension. The Canberra departed in 1961 and was replaced in 1962 the Vulcan bomber force with 3, 9, 12 and 35 Squadrons until 1964. It was then selected as the future base for the TSR2 which failed to materialise.
In 1966 converted from bomber to fighter base it became home for the new McDonnell Douglas Phantom fighter-bomber (pictured above) and transferred to Fighter Command and No.38 Group.
Coningsby was the first airfield to receive the Tornado (pictured above) and was the first RAF Station to receive its replacement, the Eurofighter Typhoon (also above).
Although built as a Class A airfield only one runway, 07 - 25, is in regular use.
RAF Coningsby is home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
