Bought by the Admiralty from Earl of Bristol's Estate in 1915 Cranwell extended to 2500 acres (1012 Hectares) the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), Training Establishment, Cranwell was officially opened on 1st April 1916. Exactly two years later with the establishment of the Royal Air Force as an independent service, the RNAS Training Establishment became Royal Air Force Cranwell. The Royal Air Force College Cranwell was formed on 1 November 1919 as the RAF (Cadet) College. It is the RAF equivalent of Sandhurst or the Britannia Royal Naval College. HQ CFS (Central Flying School) has been located at RAF Cranwell since 1995 when it moved from RAF Scampton. The Central Flying School (CFS) currently trains all RAF QFIs (Qualified Flying Instructors).
The flying field has two concrete runways, roughly north/south and east/west and two type C hangars.
Barkston Heath is a satellite landing field for RAF Cranwell. Digby has also been a satellite field for Cranwell in the past.
