First used in 1940 as a grass-surfaced Relief Landing Ground for aircraft from Cranwell operating from Barkston Heath. It was developed into a Class 'A' bomber airfield for 5 Group, during 1942. In October of the same year, 5 Group's Air Bomber Training Flight arrived, although not yet fully operational. However no front-line squadrons were allocated to the station and it reverted back to Cranwell for night flying training. In May 1943, 1506 Blind Approach Training (BAT) Flight arrived, and stayed until August 1943 when Fulbeck was transferred to the USAAF, becoming Station 488. Initially used by the 434th Troop Carrier Group (TCG), who arrived in October, later replaced by the 422nd TCG who arrived in March of 1944. In September, the 440th TCG arrived from Exeter to participate in Operation Market Garden. Facilities at Fulbeck were far from adequate and some personell were moved to Cottesmore, 25 miles away in Rutland.
The airfield was returned to the RAF in September 1944, and was reallocated to 5 Group. In October, 49 Squadron arrived from Fiskerton with their Lancasters, to be joined in November by 189 Squadron, from Bardney. Both squadrons subsequently left Fulbeck in April 1945, 189 Squadron went back to Bardney followed by 49 Squadron which transferred to Syerston, Nottinghamshire in April.
After the end of hostilities, Fulbeck was retained as an active station, initially involved with equipment disposal and latterly, as a RLG for Cranwell, until final closure in 1970.
