RAF Hibaldstow
Airfield Code: HE; Grid reference centred on: SE 981 009Intended for Bomber Command's use, this Class "A" airfield had the usual three intersecting runways. It would however be used by fighter command, its concrete runways making it rare amongst fighter airfields. The airfield was commissioned in May 1941 when 255 Squadron occupied the station with their Defiant night fighters arriving from Kirton-in-Lindsey. 255 Squadron was joined by 253 Squadron from RAF Skeabrea in Orkney in September 1941. By the start of 1943, the low risk of night attacks by the Luftwaffe led to the temporary closure of the airbase in January 1943; re-opening on 9th May 1943 for 53 OTU (Operational Training Unit) and closed again after two years, on 15th May 1945. During 1943, when Kirton-in-Lindsey was handed back from the USAAF and became a Fighter Operational Training Unit (53 OTU with Spitfires) Hibaldstow became its satellite station. The station was closed on 6th August 1947 was sold off during 1960 and 1961 and returned to agriculture. An active skydiving club has taken up residence and has kept one of the runways in use.
