RAF Kirmington
Airfield Code: EGNJ; Grid reference centred on: TA 093 101Work commenced on the airfield in early 1941. The airfield was built to the standard Class "A" specification consisting of three intersecting runways. The length of the runways lead to the closure of both the A18 to the west of Kirmington, and a minor road running to the north of the village. The encircling perimeter track were thirty-six pan type dispersals and there were two T2 hangers and a B1 hanger. Constructed as a satellite station as a RLG (Relief Landing Ground) for 15 (Pilot's) Advanced Flying Unit at RAF Leconfield. That arrangement ceased when 1 Group, Bomber Command took over the airfield in October, 1942 and it became a satellite of Elsham Wolds. First to arrive was 150 Squadron with Wellingtons from RAF Snaith. They were joined by an echelon of 142 Squadron flying Wellingtons in from RAF Waltham. Early 1943, these two units merged to form 166 Squadron. The Squadron converted to Lancasters in September and was to remain at Kirmington throughout the rest of the War. RAF Kirmington closed in December 1945 and was placed on Care & Maintenance and finally sold off. Lindsay County Council bought the airfield and developed it into what is now Humberside International Airport.
