Royal Forest of Dean Boundary Stones
The Forest of Dean is wrongly used as a generic title for a vast swathe of Gloucestershire to the West of the Severn, but to "Foresters" it is a specific area where "rights in common" accrue. Grazing of sheep is one, and for those born within the "Briavel Hundred" can claim to be a "free miner" providing they also work down a mine for a year and a day. The "Forest" is also known as the "Royal Forest of Dean" and was, in 1832 defined by several hundred boundary stones some of which still survive. In the 21ˢᵗ C, modern stones are being placed for those that did not survive the weather &/or road and housing developments. Some stones are on private land but most modern ones are at the roadside, where plastic bollards with vertical green strips also serve to mark the boundary. For an interactive map, see Gloucestershire Boundary Stones, focusing on FoD
the "Royal Forest" ( website ) has a map which shows the "Forest" looking bigger than the extent of the boundary stones see Link .
