Whisky, Uisge Beatha, the Water of Life, is one of Scotland's best-known products, enjoyed by millions the world over. Note that in Scotland, the word 'Scotch' is always an adjective, and never a noun. Only foreigners ever ask for 'a Scotch', because it's assumed that if you ask for a whisky, or a dram, or a nip, that you mean a Scotch whisky.

There are basically two types of whisky. Malt whisky, as it name suggests, is distilled from malted barley. Grain whisky can be distilled from any other grain. Once distilled, the spirit has to mature in the cask (the generic word for a convex wooden container held together by metal bands is a cask; a barrel is a specific size of cask) for at least three years before it can be legally called whisky. Some whiskies are matured for much longer than that, though for any given whisky there comes a point when it doesn't improve further in the cask, and if it isn't bottled by then it will lose its alcohol content and begin to deteriorate. Once bottled and sealed, it doesn't change.

On the market you can find blended whisky, which is a mixture anything up to 40 different malt and grain whiskies; vatted malt, which is a mixture of different malt whiskies; and single malt, which is the product of a single distillery.

This article gathers together images of many malt whisky distilleries, some of which are no longer in production. As far as possible, approximate grid references are supplied for distilleries no longer in existence. The occasional grain distillery or blending and bottling plant might sneak in, in italics. It is a work in progress, and suggestions for corrections or additions are welcome.
