INTRODUCTION
Like every town, the shops on Bromsgrove High Street change hands all the time. I first recorded the High Street in 2012 and I have now returned to show the changes over the past eleven years.
In 2012 there were 109 retail businesses including shops, banks, building societies, pubs, cafes etc. on the High Street. In November 2023 only 45 of those are still trading. In addition there were 9 empty premises in 2012 as against 14 in 2023. Nine of the shops were charity outlets in 2012 and this had risen to 13 in 2023
On the plus side however, Bromsgrove now benefits from a branch of Waitrose on the old market site. Also, it now has the Bromsgrove Retail Park, opposite the football ground on Birmingham Road. This has branches of Home Bargains, The Food Warehouse, Lidl and Greggs plus a gym. Opposite, on the site of Clark's Garage, is a branch of Aldi.
I have also found a copy of a Trade Directory listing from 1986 showing all the 110 shops on the High Street at that time. Only twelve of these are still trading in 2023. Notable amongst these are the public houses (of course) Blunts Shoe Shop, Lloyds Bank and HSBC (ex Midland Bank) Shipley's Amusements and Oulsnam Estate Agents.
This list is given at the end of this article. I've detailed the quoted business name, type of business ( where known} and the existing occupiers - again where known. If anyone has any further information I'd be happy to up-date the list.
