WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS MARKET
On a dull, cold but dry day, we left Banbury station
bound for Winchester
A brisk walk took us to the top of the High Street
past the famous Buttercross
The market was taking place in the Cathedral grounds
A number of stalls were set up in front of the beautiful West Front of the Cathedral
and by the war memorial
The main event, however, was set in the Cathedral Close where all sorts of stalls were doing a brisk trade
including hot mulled wine
and wooden animal sculptures
There was a dedicated food area
and a Makers Market section
After a good look around we decided to make our way back to the City centre via a walk along the River Itchen passing a handsome half-timbered building
We passed a mill race on the Itchen
and houses on Cheesehill Terrace with an Itchen view
Another mill-race on the Itchen
and the famous King Alfred the Great statue
On the way back to the High Street we saw the St John's Hospital Almshouses
and impressive Town Hall
A walk up the festive High Street
took us back to the station for our homeward journey
A really first class Christmas market. A great range of stalls and set in the grounds of the magnificent Cathedral and with a high quality High Street as a bonus.
