On 22 April 2013 the Department for Social Development (DSD) announced its intention to suspend Phase 2 (Donegall Square North, East and West) of the Belfast Streets Ahead project but, instead, to start work on Phase 3 (The third phase of the Belfast Streets Ahead programme concentrates on Royal Avenue, York Street (to its junction with Frederick Street), Frederick Street, Upper North Street, North Queen Street (part), the environs around St Anne’s Cathedral, Cathedral Gardens (aka Buoys Park) and Library Square (Union Street, Little Donegall Street and Library Street). The project will complement the works completed during the Belfast Streets Ahead Phase 1 project and will link to the University of Ulster’s plans for their campus at York Street. The public realm enhancements to be taken forward within Phase 3 will deliver high quality streetscapes and open space, and will include improvements to surfacing, lighting, landscaping, street furniture and public artwork).
This is a collection of photographs, taken with the intention of showing the area before, during and after the scheme. It appears as a matter of historical record only. I have no connection with the DSD, Belfast City Council or any other body, company, designer or contractor connected with the scheme.
This link Link is to the record of Phase 1 made using a Shared Description. With hindsight and experience I hope to record Phase 3 in a more accessible way. The photographs are listed, alphabetically, by street or named area. Click on the photograph to enlarge and read its caption.
The scheme is extensive and, once work starts will take several years to complete. On 28 April 2013 the DSD website stated Work is currently under way to appoint a design team to take forward the development of design proposals for the scheme. It is anticipated that the team will be in place towards the end of 2013.
This link Link refers to the proposed new University of Ulster campus at York Street and Link to the proposed Royal Exchange development, both of which are nearby.
