Smestow Brook (Tributary of the River Stour)

The Smestow Brook is one of the two main watercourses with their source in Wolverhampton. The Smestow Brook flows towards the River Severn. The Bilston Brook lies on the other side of the watershed and flows towards the River Trent.

The source of the brook lies in the Springfield area, northwest of the city centre, near the old brewery and appropriately named Water Street.

The first sign of the brook is when it emerges from a culvert into Fowlerís Fields.

At the far end of the fields it disappears under the railway embankment and appears to flow in a culvert under the Science Park and on to the Dunstall Park racecourse.

The next sighting is at the Dunstall Water Bridge over the Staffs and Worcs Canal. The brook was not diverted into the canal as it powered mills further downstream.

It then runs between the back gardens of terrace housing and a railway embankment towards Wightwick.

At this point it flows out of the town area of Wolverhampton and into rural South Staffordshire.

At the Swindon Gauging Station the flow is 0.54m3/s which I think may be about 10 million gallons per day.

The Wom Brook is one of the small streams that powered the early industrial revolution. Water power was used in the forges at Wombourne for nail making.

The Merryhill Brook rises on the high ground at Merryhill, Wolverhampton flowing west toward Lower Penn then south passing beneath the Staffs and Worcs Canal to join the Wom Brook at Giggetty.
