The tributaries of the river have their sources in the mountains surrounding Lake Vyrnwy. Lake Vyrnwy was created in the 1880s when a stone built dam was built to provide a source of water for the city of Liverpool supplying up to 50 million gallons a day. A further 5-10 million gallons are released as compensation flow into the River Vyrnwy. The site of the old village of Llanwddyn lies beneath the reservoir and a new village was built below the dam.
