East Ayrshire's Loch Doon Castle island, near Dalmellington, is exposed when the water level is low. The ruined castle was relocated to the lochside during the 18802 when the dam was built. |

Loch Bradan There's also a submerged castle on an island in Loch Bradan but, as it was of less historical significance than its neighbour in Loch Doon, it was not saved when the water level was raised. The island and it castle is shown on old maps. |

The site of the Roman Saxon Shore fort known as Walton Castle. It was probably built between AD 276-285 and stood circa 30 metres above sea level before being destroyed by sea erosion in the 18th century. As in this photo, even at low tide, the remnants barely break the surface of the sea now. |
