Day 10 – 29 August 2011

Datchet to Walton-on-Thames 15 miles

I travelled by train to Windsor. Walking through from Windsor Central station to Windsor and Eton Riverside station I took the opportunity to photograph the river and Windsor. At Windsor and Eton Riverside station I caught a train through to Datchet, just one stop along the line. This is where I had finished the previous day on the Thames Path earlier this month. I walked the short distance from the station down to the B470 where I turned left; I followed the road for a short distance before turning right and following a path to the riverbank. Following the river for a short distance brought me to Albert Bridge which I walked across. The Thames Path then followed a cut, while the course of the River Thames looped around Ham Island to the north. I walked past Old Windsor Lock at the end of the cut where it rejoins the main course of the river. Approaching Runnymede I passed a pair of grand lodges which were designed by Sir Edward Lutyens. They were commissioned by Lady Fairhaven who in 1931 gave the historic meadowland at Runnymede to the National Trust. I visited the domed Magna Carta temple which was designed in 1957 by Sir Edward Maufe. An acre of land here was given to the United States in perpetuity in memory of John F Kennedy. Following the riverbank I passed under the M25, London’s orbital motorway. Approaching Staines, the Thames Path crosses the river here via Staines Bridge. South from Staines and after passing Laleham the Thames returns to quieter countryside until passing under the M3 motorway. Downstream from the motorway bridge is Chertsey Bridge with its arches; the bridge was built in 1785, its design provides a pleasing contrast to the motorway bridge. After the bridge the Thames Path passes through Dumsey Meadow, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). At Shepperton Lock there is a choice to two routes, either taking a diversion to the north, away from the river through Lower Holliford, or taking a ferry to the south side of the river and following the path alongside the Desborough Cut. The cut was named after Lord Desborough, longest serving chairman on the Thames Conservancy. Soon after where the cut rejoins the main course of the Thames the path reaches Walton Bridge which marked the end of today’s walk. An earlier Walton Bridge was painted by Canaletto in the eighteenth century and appeared a much more appealing design than the present bridge. Leaving the Thames Path at the bridge, I walked into Walton where I caught a bus to Staines, and then a train back to Reading where I changed trains for one to take me home.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
