Geo-Trips :: St Cuthbert's Way, leg 7

St Cuthbert's Way

A walk from Hazelrigg, Tue, 29 Jun 2010 by David Purchase

preceding legThis trip is part of a series.next leg

A group of four walkers from the Bristol area completed St Cuthbert's Way in late June 2010. The Way runs from Melrose to Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and is 100 km (62 miles) long. It is nearly always walked in that direction, reflecting the life of St Cuthbert himself in the 7th century A.D.

We had good weather throughout the trip, and I secured and submitted about 140 photos. However I had been a contributor for only six months, and I did not (as I was to do on later Long Distance Paths) attempt to build up a continuous chain of photos.

This leg gave two of the three most dangerous points on the entire walk. The first was crossing the A1 at Fenwick. To be fair, it wasn't very busy, and no worse than crossing any other main road. The second was crossing the East Coast Main Line - see the photo and commentary. The third, and perhaps the most dangerous, occurred on the next and final leg.

Click the blue circles to see a photograph taken from that spot and read further information about the location. The blue lines indicate the direction of view. There is also a slideshow of this trip. ( )
