Geo-Trips :: A tour of Bristol
Bristol
A drive from Hungerford, Sat, 1 Jun 2019 by David Howard
As a collector of photos of pre-Worboys road signs I listed everything known in the Bristol area and then bought a road map and marked them all down and spent an entire Saturday getting them all. It was a warm sunny day and being the weekend untroubled by traffic, and knew the spots where I had no photos and only had to miss a bit on the way beyond Chippenham as I was running late and needed to save more light when I got there.
Unless a sign is already mapped I no longer map them here, which is the convention to keep them as anonymous as possible from negative forces, although one at least here has the road name so may as well add it. It took three hours once I arrived in Bristol to complete the job, partly as I didn't plan the route through in advance so made a few detours, which was intentional as I also wanted to cover as many spots there as possible as I have no reason to go back again. The only hitch was the entire city centre is having a new road system, and it wasn't possible to get in from the inner ring road as all the turns are blocked and as a result couldn't get one, but it wasn't as vital as the others, four directions, a very old no throughway and a parking instruction.
Finishing in Frenchay at 10pm it only got dark around 9.40, as it wasn't just June but 100 miles west of Greenwich adding a good ten minutes or so of extra light. I noticed the junctions had street lighting on the A roads, so managed a few reasonable shots going back to Chippenham to catch where I'd missed in the daytime, and once past Newbury returned on the M4 which was mainly 50mph as they are upgrading it. I've only been to Bristol a few times and was never impressed, and seeing more than the other times put together am still no more impressed, it was mainly a combination of the worst suburbs and inner city areas of south and east London besides a few of the edges. I always compare wherever I go with London areas, and could see Leyton, Walthamstow, Dagenham, Erith, Deptford, Peckham and Denmark Hill, while in contrast my favourite town so far is Eastbourne as it is like Bromley on Sea, probably because it would have been built around the same time and by many of the same builders.
