Geo-Trips :: Well Ozzy, I finally made it
Birmingham
A walk from Villa Park, Aston, Wed, 3 Dec 2025 by Basher Eyre
In the charming film '84 Charing Cross Road' Helene Hanff plans for many years to visit the bookshop where her pen pal Frank Doel works; but never makes it until after he died. She enters No 84 and says "Well Frankie, I finally made it". Similarly, I had always promised myself that when Ozzy died, I would come up to Brum for what I knew would be a tremendous outpouring of love and respect. And right to the end he had great timing, dying on the first day of my holiday. But...
My mum had a series of setbacks and I couldn't make it. But when she recovered she insisted I made that pilgrimage- which I chose to do on Ozzy's birthday. I started at Vila Park, headed the short distance to his childhood home, along to his old primary school, then down from Aston to the city centre, passing The Crown, taking in the Ozzy exhibition and finishing at the Black Sabbath Bridge. One of the most memorable days of my life....
