Geo-Trips :: Completing Hectad NO07 / Carn an Righ
Spittal of Glenshee
A walk from Dalmunzie Hotel in Glenlochsie, Sat, 19 Apr 2014 by William Starkey
A lengthy walk linking the remaining un-photographed grid squares in hectad NO07 with the Munro Carn an Righ.
Route: Dalmunzie Hotel > Glen Taitneach > Allt Easgaidh > Loch nan Eun > Gleann Mòr > Allt a' Ghlinne Mhòir > Fealar Lodge > Miadan Mòr > Allt a' Ghlinne Bhig > Carn an Righ > Loch nan Eun > Allt Easgaidh > Glen Taitneach > Dalmunzie Hotel.
[GPS track is indicative only, added "post-hoc"]
Access to this area is helped significantly by the hillwalkers carpark at the Dalmunzie Hotel, which saves several kilometres walking in comparison to a base in Spittal of Glenshee. I started on a beautiful spring morning, with an uncomplicated approach through Glen Taitneach to Loch nan Eun – no navigational difficulties here. From the loch, the route circled Carn an Righ, passing the remote Fealar Lodge, before returning to the col between Carn an Righ and Mam nan Cairn, and ascending the former peak. Paths lead back to Loch nan Eun, and Glen Taitneach. A long day’s walking in magnificent scenery.
As with many walks in the highlands, this route utilises the local river system for access into a remote area, with the course of the Allt a' Ghlinne Mhòir offering a relatively easy passage from Loch nan Eun to the Fealar Lodge track east of Meall na Spionaig. In early spring, melting snow swells the rivers, which appear bright silver in the morning sun – a beautiful sight. After a long days walking, the summit of the Munro Carn an Righ is a fine vantage point as sunset approaches. Not for the first time when completing a hectad for Geograph, I was unable to walk quickly enough to complete the route in daylight, the final kilometre was by torchlight – sadly no time for “refreshments” in the very welcoming Dalmunzie Hotel.
Distance - 41.3km; Ascent - 1382 metres (both by GPS); duration 11 hrs 30 mins, solo. Camera used - Canon G1X.
