NS3878 : Crystal Brain Fungus (Exidia nucleata)

taken 16 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Crystal Brain Fungus (Exidia nucleata)
Crystal Brain Fungus (Exidia nucleata)
(A commonly encountered older synonym for this species is Myxarium nucleatum)

This fungus can occur in much more extensive patches, becoming more convoluted and brain-like in shape. However, the small specimens shown here contain cream-coloured "kernels", which are small concretions of calcium oxalate. These are not always present in this species, but, when they are, they provide a useful aid to identification.

Compare NS3983 : White Brain fungus (Exidia thuretiana); see that item for details of the differences between the two species.
