This building was originally the Madeira Hotel, one of whose guests included Guglielmo Marconi, who, right here, erected a 100-foot mast and received the world's first paid radio message. The message came from Lord Kelvin on the Isle of Wight on 3 June 1898.
In 1947 Court Royal became a convalescent home for Welsh miners, and it still carries out this function today.
