It has been common practice to knock properties like this down in Cambridge and replace them with several smaller ones on the same plot (original house and garden). This plot has been the subject of planning applications for the last 4 years which have all been rejected due to opposition by local residents and councillors. The latest was to knock it down and replace it with 43 student rooms. Given the recent slump in the property market it is likely that a less ambitious plan earlier that would actually have been accepted would have been most profitable.
