Dartmoor: Haytor Quarries
Dartmoor: Haytor Quarries
This item of rusty winding gear is one of the very few man-made remains still left in the quarry after it flourished from about 1820 to 1900 producing granite building blocks. This quarry is included within the 49 hecatare area of the Haytor Rocks and Quarries SSSI so defined by virtue of the geological importance of the exposures of two principal variants (the 'Giant' and 'Blue' varieties) of the coarse, megacrystic biotite-granite of Dartmoor.
