The lock is one of 29 (or 27 if you use the wide locks at the basin) locks between the River Severn at Stourport, and the summit level of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal at Compton. Beyond the first line of trees the Stourbridge Canal branches to the east at Stourton Junction.

The S & W Canal Society has this to say regarding the name of the area: "The origin of the name Stewponey has never been accurately explained. Suggestions include a corruption of Estepona, referring to an early connection with the Spanish town of the same name, and stewpons which were medieval ponds used by monks for keeping carp as a food supply."
