Before the construction of the Newcastle By-pass, A1, Scotswood Bridge was the principal crossing of the River Tyne upstream from Newcastle city centre. Seen from Hadrian's Way, a path from Wylam to Newcastle along the north bank of the Tyne which carries both Hadrian's Cycleway
