In the background is the former Dingleton Hospital that was sold to a private developer in 2001 and has since been converted into residential flats. Dingleton Hospital, or Melrose District Asylum as it was known when it was completed in 1872, had another name change in 1930 of Roxburgh District Mental Hospital. In 1949 it was renamed Dingleton Hospital when an “open doors” system was introduced and the innovative methods of community treatment gave the hospital international renown. The functions of the hospital were transferred to smaller specialist units at Huntlyburn House and the Borders General Hospital.
